Furniture sales slow in run-up to this CNY

KOTA KINABALU: Sales of furniture and living items have been slow in the run-up to this year’s
Chinese New Year celebration, when compared to the same period last year.
“There is a decrease of about 30 per cent,” said a spokesperson of one of the prominent furniture
business outlets in Sadong Jaya, here, when met by The Borneo Post yesterday.
According to the spokesperson, despite intensive efforts through special promotions and discounts,
this year’s sale remained lower compared to the sales in previous years.
He added that sales of furniture and living products during festive seasons this year saw a
decrease even during Hari Raya, when such products are normally at its ‘peak sale season’.
The drop in sales, he said, may be due to the increase in the prices of furniture and living products.
“I think it’s not only us. I hear a lot about similar issues faced by other business operators.
And furniture is not something people buy every day, so we feel the drop significantly,” he said.
On the other hand, Harry Aminudin, 33, supervisor at Chan Furniture Sdn Bhd reported about
a 10 per cent increase in the sales of furniture products at the outlet.
“It is still lower than the sales during Hari Raya season, but the sales during this Chinese New Year
did increase compared to non-peak seasons,” said Harry.
He said that this may be contributed by the promotions and discounts available during
the festive season. Sales can go up to 50 per cent and 80 per cent at the outlet.
“People of various backgrounds take advantage of the sales available during festive season,
so the number of sales are normally higher,” said Harry, who had been with the company for five years.
